What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • kidney disease or kidney problems

  • a history of bone marrow or kidney transplant

How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a full glass of water. You may take it with or without food. Take your doses at regular intervals, as prescribed—even if you feel better. Do not skip doses or stop taking it early, as this may cause the infection to worsen or return.

Drink plenty of fluids while taking valacyclovir to help protect your kidneys.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.

NOTE: This medicine is for you only. Do not share this medicine with others, even if they have similar symptoms.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

This list may not describe all possible interactions. Provide your health care provider with a list of all medications, supplements, or herbs you are using. Mention if you drink alcohol, smoke, or use recreational drugs.

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

  • Begin taking valacyclovir at the first sign of symptoms (such as tingling, itching, or burning) for best results.

  • This medication does not prevent the spread of herpes, even if you do not have symptoms. To avoid infecting others, avoid sexual contact when symptoms are present and use barrier protection (like condoms) even when you have no symptoms.

  • Drink plenty of fluids to help protect your kidneys while on this medicine.

  • Notify your doctor if symptoms do not improve or worsen after several days of treatment.

  • If you have a weakened immune system, you may be at greater risk for side effects; follow your doctor’s instructions carefully.
