What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • An unusual or allergic reaction to aciclovir, valaciclovir, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Kidney disease or reduced kidney function (as the medicine is primarily cleared by the kidneys).
  • Neurological problems or history of seizures.

How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a glass of water, with or without food, as directed by your doctor. It may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time. If your tablet is dispersible (can be dissolved), dissolve it in a glass of water before taking it, as advised. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better, as stopping too soon may not completely clear the infection and could lead to recurrence or resistance.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once. Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, headache, confusion, hallucinations, agitation, or kidney problems.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

What may interact with this medicine?

Give your health care provider a list of all the medicines, herbs, non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements you use. Also tell them if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs. Some items may interact with your medicine.

  • Cimetidine (an antacid), which can also increase aciclovir levels.
  • Mycophenolate mofetil (an immunosuppressant), as both drugs can affect each other’s levels.
  • Other medicines that affect the kidneys, as concurrent use might increase the risk of kidney problems.
  • Certain vaccines (e.g., live attenuated vaccines).
