What is this medicine?
APEESEZ (Haloperidol) is an antipsychotic medicine (also called a neuroleptic). It is used to treat mental/mood disorders such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and certain behavioral problems. It may also be used to control symptoms of severe agitation, tics, or acute psychosis. It works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain.


What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • Parkinson’s disease

  • Heart problems, irregular heartbeat, or recent heart attack

  • Liver disease

  • Seizure disorders (epilepsy)

  • Glaucoma

  • Thyroid disorders

  • Brain tumors or history of brain injury

  • Dementia or Alzheimer’s disease

  • Low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood

  • Depression or suicidal thoughts

  • An unusual or allergic reaction to haloperidol or similar medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • If you drink alcohol or use street drugs

  • Pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • Breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?
Take this medicine by mouth with a full glass of water. Follow the directions on your prescription label. Take at the same time each day. Do not take more often than prescribed.

Overdosage:
If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.


What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • Alcohol

  • Other antipsychotic medications

  • Medicines for depression or anxiety

  • Medicines for seizures

  • Certain antibiotics (e.g., erythromycin)

  • Medicines that prolong QT interval (e.g., amiodarone, quinidine)

  • Rifampin

  • Levodopa and dopamine agonists

  • Diuretics (may affect potassium/magnesium levels)

  • Haloperidol can increase the risk of heatstroke. Avoid overheating or dehydration, especially in hot weather.

  • Older adults may be more sensitive to side effects, especially those related to heart rhythm or involuntary muscle movements.


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?
Serious side effects to report to your doctor right away:

  • Signs of allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling of the face/tongue/throat, severe dizziness, trouble breathing)

  • Irregular heartbeat or chest pain

  • Uncontrolled muscle movements (especially of the face, tongue, jaw)

  • Muscle stiffness, fever, confusion, sweating (possible signs of neuroleptic malignant syndrome)

  • Seizures

  • Trouble swallowing or breathing

  • Yellowing of eyes or skin (jaundice)

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report if persistent or bothersome):

  • Drowsiness or dizziness

  • Dry mouth

  • Constipation

  • Restlessness or agitation

  • Weight gain

  • Headache

  • Sleep disturbances

Where should I keep my medicine?
