What is this medicine?

DASATINIB is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor. This medicine is used to treat certain types of leukemia, such as Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukemia (Ph+ CML) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph+ ALL). It works by blocking abnormal proteins that promote the growth of cancer cells.


What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • heart disease, including irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias)

  • liver or kidney disease

  • lung disease or breathing problems

  • low blood platelet count or other bleeding disorders

  • low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood

  • lactose intolerance or any other intolerance to excipients

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to dasatinib or any other medications

  • if you are taking immunosuppressive treatments

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a glass of water. It can be taken with or without food. Take it at the same time each day.

  • Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush, split, or chew.

  • Wash hands before and after handling the tablet.

  • Do not handle crushed or broken tablets.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room right away.


What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take double or extra doses.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • antifungals like ketoconazole, itraconazole

  • macrolide antibiotics like erythromycin, clarithromycin

  • anti-seizure drugs like carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital

  • rifampin and other tuberculosis drugs

  • antacids or H2 blockers (avoid taking within 2 hours of dasatinib)

  • proton pump inhibitors like omeprazole, lansoprazole

  • medicines that prolong the QT interval (heart rhythm changes)

  • St. John’s Wort

  • grapefruit or grapefruit juice

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

  • You will need regular blood tests to monitor your response and side effects.

  • This medicine can reduce blood cell counts; notify your doctor if you notice signs of infection, unusual bruising, or bleeding.

  • Avoid activities that may cause injury.

  • Do not receive any live vaccines while taking this medicine without doctor approval.

  • Women should not become pregnant while taking dasatinib and should use effective contraception.

  • Men should also use contraception during treatment and for a time afterward.

  • Avoid grapefruit or grapefruit juice.

  • Report signs of fluid retention, such as swelling, rapid weight gain, or shortness of breath.


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • signs of infection (fever, chills, sore throat)

  • unusual bruising or bleeding

  • chest pain, fast or irregular heartbeat

  • shortness of breath or cough

  • swelling of ankles, hands, or face

  • yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice)

  • severe headache or dizziness

  • confusion, trouble speaking, or visual changes

  • muscle cramps, weakness, or numbness

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report if persistent or bothersome):

  • fatigue or weakness

  • headache

  • nausea or vomiting

  • diarrhea or constipation

  • skin rash or mild itching

  • loss of appetite

  • joint or muscle pain
