What is this medicine?

ARIZOLE 5 mg Tablet contains Aripiprazole, an atypical antipsychotic. This medicine is used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and may also be used in combination with other medications to treat major depressive disorder. It works by helping to restore the balance of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, especially dopamine and serotonin.


What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • dementia (especially in elderly patients)

  • diabetes or a family history of diabetes

  • heart disease, heart failure, or irregular heartbeat

  • history of stroke or “mini-stroke”

  • liver or kidney disease

  • seizures or epilepsy

  • trouble swallowing

  • suicidal thoughts or behavior

  • low blood pressure or dizziness when standing

  • dehydration or low fluid levels

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to aripiprazole, other antipsychotics, medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a glass of water. You may take it with or without food. Try to take your doses at the same time each day.

Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take more than prescribed. Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly unless directed by your doctor, as it may cause withdrawal symptoms or worsen your condition.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.


What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • other antipsychotic medications

  • medications for seizures (e.g., carbamazepine, phenytoin)

  • rifampin

  • antidepressants like fluoxetine or paroxetine

  • antifungal medications like ketoconazole

  • medications for high blood pressure

  • certain HIV medications

  • alcohol

  • St. John’s Wort

  • sedatives or tranquilizers

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

  • Keep all appointments with your doctor to monitor your progress and side effects.

  • It may take a few weeks to feel the full effect of this medicine.

  • Be aware of signs of worsening depression or suicidal thoughts, especially when starting this medicine or adjusting the dose.

  • This medicine may increase blood sugar levels—especially in patients with diabetes. Monitor blood sugar as directed.

  • Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated. Drink plenty of fluids, especially in hot weather or during exercise.

  • Aripiprazole may make you drowsy or dizzy. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medicine affects you.

  • Avoid alcohol, which can increase drowsiness or dizziness.

  • Use caution when rising from a sitting or lying position to prevent light-headedness or fainting.

  • Notify your doctor if you experience uncontrollable movements (especially of the face, mouth, or tongue).


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • signs of an allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing)

  • fever, stiff muscles, confusion (possible sign of neuroleptic malignant syndrome)

  • uncontrollable body movements (tardive dyskinesia)

  • irregular heartbeat or palpitations

  • severe dizziness or fainting

  • increased blood sugar (excessive thirst, frequent urination)

  • seizures

  • thoughts of self-harm or suicide

  • difficulty swallowing

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor if bothersome or persistent):

  • drowsiness or fatigue

  • nausea or vomiting

  • restlessness or anxiety

  • increased appetite and weight gain

  • constipation

  • headache

  • insomnia

  • dizziness
