It works by blocking a protein called epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), which is involved in the growth and spread of cancer cells.


What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • liver disease

  • kidney disease

  • lung disease or a history of lung inflammation (interstitial lung disease)

  • eye disorders

  • gastrointestinal ulcers or bleeding

  • if you smoke or recently quit smoking

  • if you are using any other cancer treatments

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to gefitinib or any other ingredients in the tablet

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?
Take this medicine by mouth with or without food, as directed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole with water. If you have difficulty swallowing, you may disperse the tablet in a glass of non-carbonated water. Stir until it dissolves and drink it immediately.

Take it at the same time every day. Do not take more often than directed. Do not stop taking it unless your doctor tells you to.

Overdosage:
If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room right away.


What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take only the next scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • rifampicin or phenytoin (used to treat epilepsy or infections)

  • St. John’s wort (herbal supplement)

  • proton pump inhibitors like omeprazole

  • antacids or H2-receptor antagonists (like ranitidine)

  • warfarin or other blood thinners

  • other anti-cancer medicines

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

  • Inform your doctor if you develop eye irritation, vision changes, or severe diarrhea.

  • Avoid taking antacids within 2 hours before or after taking Gefzest, as it can affect absorption.

  • Inform your doctor if you plan to get pregnant or think you are pregnant.


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?
Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • sudden difficulty breathing, chest pain

  • severe or persistent diarrhea

  • signs of liver problems (yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine)

  • eye irritation or pain

  • severe skin rash or blistering

  • severe abdominal pain or vomiting blood

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report if bothersome or persistent):
