What is this medicine?
ACYPROVE CREAM 5% contains Acyclovir, an antiviral medicine. This cream is used topically to treat cold sores (herpes labialis) on the lips and face caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). It helps relieve symptoms and speed up healing, but it does not cure herpes or prevent future outbreaks.


What should I tell my health care provider before I use this medicine?
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • Weakened immune system (e.g., HIV/AIDS, bone marrow transplant, cancer treatment)

  • Known allergy or sensitivity to acyclovir, valacyclovir, or any component of the cream

  • If the area of infection is inside the mouth or genitals (this cream is meant for external use only)

  • Pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • Breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?
This medicine is for external use only. Do not take by mouth.

  • Wash your hands before and after applying the cream.

  • Apply a thin layer to the affected area, usually 5 times a day for 4 to 5 days, or as directed by your doctor.

  • Start using at the first sign of a cold sore (such as tingling, itching, or redness) for best results.

  • Avoid getting the cream in your eyes, nose, or mouth.

  • Do not cover the treated area with a bandage unless instructed by your doctor.

  • Use for the full course prescribed, even if symptoms improve early.

Overdosage: Accidental ingestion or overuse should be reported to a poison control center or emergency room immediately.


What if I miss a dose?
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and follow your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply extra cream to make up for the missed dose.


What may interact with this medicine?
Although interactions with topical acyclovir are rare, tell your health care provider about:

  • Any other topical medications you are using on the same area

  • Immunosuppressive medications (for people with weakened immune systems)

  • Any prescription or over-the-counter creams, ointments, or herbal skin products

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

  • If your symptoms worsen or do not improve within 5 to 10 days, contact your doctor.

  • Avoid close physical contact (like kissing) when sores are present.

  • Use a lip balm or sunscreen on the lips to help prevent future outbreaks triggered by sun exposure.

  • This medicine does not prevent the spread of infection. Practice proper hygiene to avoid spreading the virus.

  • Do not use on mucous membranes or genital herpes unless directed by a physician.


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • Signs of allergic reaction such as rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing

  • Redness, burning, or stinging that gets worse or spreads

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report if bothersome or persistent):

  • Mild burning or stinging at the application site

  • Itching or dry skin

  • Flaking or peeling at the site of application

Where should I keep my medicine?

  • Keep out of the reach of children.

  • Store at room temperature between 20°C and 25°C (68°F and 77°F).

  • Do not freeze.
