MODASMART (modafinil) is a wakefulness-promoting agent. It is used to treat excessive daytime sleepiness caused by narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), or shift work sleep disorder (SWSD). It works by affecting certain substances in the brain that control the sleep-wake cycle.


What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • Heart problems or history of irregular heartbeat

  • High blood pressure

  • Liver disease

  • Kidney disease

  • Mental health disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety, psychosis)

  • History of drug or alcohol abuse

  • An unusual or allergic reaction to modafinil, armodafinil, or other medicines

  • Pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • Breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a glass of water. Follow the instructions provided by your doctor.

  • For narcolepsy or OSA: Take in the morning once daily.

  • For shift work sleep disorder: Take approximately 1 hour before the start of your work shift.

Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take more than prescribed. Do not stop taking this medicine without consulting your doctor.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately.


What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is near the time of your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take two doses at once.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • Birth control pills, patches, or implants (modafinil may reduce their effectiveness)

  • Cyclosporine

  • Blood thinners like warfarin

  • Medicines for seizures (e.g., phenytoin, carbamazepine)

  • Antidepressants

  • Antifungal medications (e.g., ketoconazole)

  • Medicines for anxiety or sleep
