What is this medicine?

EZETIMIBE (ZETIHEAL) is a cholesterol absorption inhibitor. This medicine is used to lower cholesterol levels in the blood. It works by reducing the amount of cholesterol your body absorbs from food. ZETIHEAL is used to treat high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia) and may be prescribed alone or with other medications (such as statins) to reduce the risk of heart disease.


What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • liver disease

  • kidney disease

  • muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness

  • a history of high cholesterol due to a genetic disorder (such as familial hypercholesterolemia or sitosterolemia)

  • thyroid disorder

  • if you are on a low-fat or low-cholesterol diet

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to ezetimibe or other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a glass of water. It can be taken with or without food. Take your dose once daily, at the same time each day.

Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Continue taking it even if you feel well, unless your doctor tells you to stop.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.


What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take double or extra doses.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • statins (such as simvastatin, atorvastatin, rosuvastatin)

  • cyclosporine

  • warfarin or other blood thinners

  • fibrates (such as fenofibrate, gemfibrozil)

  • bile acid sequestrants (e.g., cholestyramine) – may reduce effectiveness of ezetimibe
    (Take ezetimibe at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after such medicines)

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

Visit your doctor or health care professional regularly to monitor your progress and check your cholesterol levels. You may need liver function tests and other blood tests.

Report any muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if you are also taking a statin.

Maintain a low-cholesterol and low-fat diet, and follow any lifestyle recommendations given by your doctor.

Tell your doctor if you become pregnant or plan to become pregnant. This medicine should only be used in pregnancy or while breastfeeding if clearly needed and prescribed by a doctor.


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • allergic reactions such as skin rash, itching, or hives

  • swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat

  • severe muscle pain or weakness

  • yellowing of the eyes or skin (signs of liver problems)

  • unusual fatigue

  • chest pain

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor if persistent or bothersome):

  • headache

  • diarrhea

  • joint or back pain

  • upper respiratory tract symptoms (e.g., cough, runny nose)

  • abdominal pain

  • tiredness

Where should I keep my medicine?
