What is this medicine?

ATR 20 mg contains Atorvastatin, a statin (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor). This medicine is used to lower bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides, while increasing good cholesterol (HDL) in the blood. It helps reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular events, especially in people with diabetes, hypertension, or a family history of heart disease.


What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • liver disease or abnormal liver function

  • kidney disease

  • thyroid disorders

  • diabetes

  • personal or family history of muscle disorders

  • alcohol consumption of more than 2 drinks per day

  • Asian ethnicity (may require a lower dose)

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to atorvastatin, other statins, or any ingredients in this medicine

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a glass of water, with or without food, once daily at the same time each day. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully.

Do not take more than the prescribed dose. Continue taking it even if you feel well.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room right away.


What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take double or extra doses.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • other cholesterol-lowering medicines (e.g., gemfibrozil, fenofibrate, niacin)

  • certain antibiotics and antifungals (e.g., clarithromycin, erythromycin, itraconazole, ketoconazole)

  • antiviral medicines for HIV or hepatitis C (e.g., ritonavir, lopinavir, sofosbuvir/velpatasvir)

  • cyclosporine

  • digoxin

  • oral contraceptives

  • warfarin or other blood thinners

  • grapefruit juice (especially in large amounts)

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

  • Visit your doctor regularly for blood tests to check cholesterol levels and liver function.

  • Report any muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if accompanied by fever or fatigue — this may be a sign of serious muscle injury (rhabdomyolysis).

  • Avoid excessive alcohol consumption as it increases the risk of liver problems.

  • Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding — this medicine may harm the unborn baby or nursing infant.

  • Maintain a healthy diet, low in cholesterol and fat, and exercise regularly as advised.

  • If you experience signs of liver issues (e.g., yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, fatigue), inform your doctor immediately.

  • Take antacids at least 2 hours after atorvastatin if needed, as they can reduce its effectiveness.


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness (especially with fever or fatigue)

  • dark-colored urine

  • yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)

  • severe fatigue or weakness

  • liver problems

  • confusion or memory issues (rare)

  • headache
