It works by narrowing blood vessels and increasing blood pressure.


What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • high blood pressure

  • overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)

  • asthma or other breathing problems

  • heart disease, especially poor circulation, ischemic heart disease, or arrhythmia

  • diabetes

  • blood clotting disorders

  • history of thrombosis or embolism

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to norepinephrine or similar drugs

  • if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant

  • breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?

This medicine is given by a health care professional in a hospital setting, usually via intravenous (IV) infusion into a vein. The dose will be individualized and closely monitored, depending on the severity of your condition and your response to treatment.

Do not attempt to use or inject this medicine yourself.

Overdosage: Signs of overdose include severe hypertension, headache, bradycardia, or arrhythmias. Emergency medical intervention is required in case of overdose.


What if I miss a dose?

This medicine is usually administered in an emergency or intensive care setting. Doses are scheduled and managed by health professionals, so missed doses are unlikely. If you believe a dose has been missed, notify the medical team immediately.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) such as isocarboxazid, phenelzine, or tranylcypromine

  • tricyclic antidepressants

  • certain general anesthetics (e.g., halothane)

  • beta-blockers

  • digoxin or other drugs for heart rhythm

  • ergot alkaloids

  • linezolid

  • diuretics

  • Use caution if you have poor peripheral circulation or diabetes, as this medicine may worsen those conditions.


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • irregular or slow heartbeat

  • chest pain or tightness

  • difficulty breathing

  • severe headache

  • anxiety or restlessness

  • pain, swelling, or discoloration at injection site

  • tingling, numbness, or weakness in limbs

  • signs of tissue damage near the injection site (blistering, discoloration, necrosis)
