What is this medicine?
RAMIPEN (Ramipril) is an ACE inhibitor. It is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and congestive heart failure, and to improve survival after a heart attack. It may also reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, or death in patients at high cardiovascular risk.


What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • heart or blood vessel disease

  • kidney or liver disease

  • low blood pressure

  • diabetes

  • immune system disease like lupus or scleroderma

  • if you are on a low-salt or salt-substitute diet

  • history of angioedema (swelling of face, lips, throat, or tongue)

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to ramipril, other ACE inhibitors, insect venom, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • if you are breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?
Take this medicine by mouth with a glass of water. You may take it with or without food. Take your doses at regular intervals, usually once or twice daily. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Do not stop taking this medicine unless advised by your doctor.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.


What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • diuretics (water pills)

  • potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics

  • lithium

  • NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen)

  • diabetes medicines including insulin

  • gold injections for arthritis

  • other medicines for high blood pressure

  • aliskiren

  • certain immunosuppressants like sirolimus, everolimus

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

  • Visit your doctor regularly to check your blood pressure and kidney function.

  • You may feel dizzy or lightheaded, especially during the first few days. Avoid standing up quickly.

  • Avoid alcohol and dehydration, which can increase side effects.

  • Notify your doctor if you experience a persistent dry cough, swelling, or trouble breathing.

  • Inform your doctor immediately if you plan to become pregnant or think you might be pregnant. Ramipril can harm an unborn baby.

  • Avoid salt substitutes unless approved by your doctor.

  • Be cautious when treating yourself for colds, coughs, or pain—some OTC medicines can increase blood pressure.


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?

Report these side effects to your doctor immediately:

  • allergic reactions (rash, swelling of face/lips/tongue, difficulty breathing)

  • chest pain

  • decreased urine output

  • irregular heartbeat

  • fainting or severe dizziness

  • signs of infection (fever, sore throat)

  • yellowing of skin or eyes

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report if persistent):

  • dry cough

  • headache

  • fatigue

  • nausea

  • stomach upset

  • mild dizziness

Where should I keep my medicine?

  • Keep out of reach of children.

  • Store at room temperature between 20 to 25°C (68 to 77°F).

  • Protect from light and moisture.
