What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • Allergy to albendazole, ivermectin, or similar medications

  • Liver disease or impaired liver function

  • Neurological conditions, such as seizures or history of neurocysticercosis

  • Pregnant or planning pregnancy (albendazole is not recommended during pregnancy)

  • Breast-feeding (consult doctor)

  • Ongoing medications, especially for seizures, liver issues, or other parasites

  • If you’re driving or operating machinery (this medicine can cause dizziness or drowsiness)


How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth, with or without food, as prescribed. Typically, one or more doses may be prescribed depending on the infection. Swallow tablets whole—do not chew or crush.

  • Overdosage: If you think you took too much, contact poison control or your nearest emergency department immediately.

What if I miss a dose?

  • Rifampin or other drugs that affect liver enzymes

  • Other antiparasitic medicines that alter liver metabolism


What should I watch for while using this medicine?

  • You may feel drowsy, dizzy, or sleepy—avoid driving/machinery until you know how it affects you.

  • Dead worms in stool may occur—this is normal.

  • Keep hydra/liver function tests and follow-up appointments if prescribed.

  • Practice hygiene, especially in families, to avoid reinfection.

  • Pregnant women: use only if clearly needed and prescribed by a doctor.


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?

Report immediately (serious):

  • Allergic reactions (rash, swelling, breathing issues)

  • Severe dizziness or mental changes

  • Persistent GI pain

Usually less serious (report if persistent):

  • Headache, dizziness

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea

  • Mild abdominal pain; increased liver enzymes or fever (watch labs if directed)
