What is this medicine?

ASSURANS (sildenafil citrate) is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. This medicine is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH)—high blood pressure in the lungs. It helps improve exercise capacity and delays worsening of the condition.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

• heart or blood vessel disease, including heart failure or irregular heartbeat

• recent history of stroke or heart attack

• low or high blood pressure

• liver or kidney disease

• eye problems like retinitis pigmentosa or a history of vision loss

• bleeding disorders

• stomach ulcers

• deformed penis shape, Peyronie’s disease, or conditions that may predispose to priapism

• an unusual or allergic reaction to sildenafil, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

• pregnant or trying to get pregnant

• breast-feeding

How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a glass of water. Follow the directions on the prescription label. It is usually taken 2 to 3 times a day, about 4 to 6 hours apart. Do not take more than directed. Do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

What may interact with this medicine?

• nitrates (for chest pain or heart problems)

• riociguat

• certain antifungal medicines like ketoconazole or itraconazole

• certain antibiotics like erythromycin or clarithromycin

• HIV/AIDS medications like ritonavir, saquinavir

• medicines for high blood pressure

• other PDE5 inhibitors (like tadalafil, vardenafil)

• alpha-blockers (used for high blood pressure or prostate issues)

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

Visit your doctor or health care professional regularly to monitor your progress. If your symptoms do not improve or worsen, inform your doctor.

Avoid using other PDE5 inhibitors while on this medicine. Limit alcohol as it may increase side effects like dizziness or fainting. Do not take this medicine with nitrate medications due to the risk of a serious drop in blood pressure.

If you experience sudden vision or hearing loss, seek medical help immediately. If you have a painful or prolonged erection lasting more than 4 hours, get medical help right away—this can cause permanent damage.

Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how this medicine affects you.

Serious side effects (call your doctor immediately):

• allergic reactions like rash, itching, swelling of face/lips/tongue

• chest pain or irregular heartbeat

• shortness of breath

• sudden vision or hearing loss

• prolonged or painful erection

• seizures

• fainting or severe dizziness

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report if persistent or bothersome):

• headache

• flushing

• nasal congestion

• upset stomach

• back or muscle pain

• nausea

Where should I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children.
