What is this medicine?BIOVAS 10 mg contains Atorvastatin, a statin. This medicine is used to lower levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides, and to raise good cholesterol (HDL) in the blood. It is also used to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other heart-related complications in people with or at risk of cardiovascular disease.


What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • liver disease or abnormal liver function tests

  • kidney disease

  • muscle disorders or family history of muscle problems

  • thyroid problems

  • diabetes

  • history of alcohol abuse

  • if you are of Asian descent (dose adjustments may be needed)

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to atorvastatin, other statins, or any ingredient in the tablet

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth, with or without food. Take it once a day at the same time every day, as directed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.

Do not take more or less than instructed. Do not stop taking this medicine without your doctor’s advice.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately.


What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take double or extra doses.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • cyclosporine

  • certain antibiotics (e.g., clarithromycin, erythromycin)

  • antifungal medications (e.g., itraconazole, ketoconazole)

  • HIV protease inhibitors (e.g., ritonavir, lopinavir)

  • hepatitis C antivirals

  • niacin (vitamin B3) in high doses

  • fibrates (e.g., gemfibrozil)

  • colchicine

  • grapefruit juice (in large amounts)

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

  • Visit your doctor regularly to check your cholesterol and liver function through blood tests.

  • Report any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially with fever or tiredness.

  • Avoid excessive alcohol—it increases the risk of liver problems.

  • Follow a low-cholesterol diet and exercise plan as advised.

  • This medicine should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding—inform your doctor if you become or plan to become pregnant.

  • Tell your doctor if you experience signs of liver issues: yellowing of the skin/eyes, dark urine, or upper abdominal pain.

  • Avoid drinking large amounts of grapefruit juice, as it may increase side effects.


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional immediately:

  • muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness

  • yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)

  • dark urine

  • allergic reactions: rash, itching, swelling of the face/lips/tongue

  • severe fatigue or weakness

  • difficulty breathing

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report if persistent or bothersome):

  • diarrhea

  • constipation

  • headache

  • mild muscle aches

  • joint pain
