What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • Immune system problems (e.g., HIV/AIDS, bone marrow transplant)
  • An unusual or allergic reaction to aciclovir, valaciclovir, other antiviral medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • Pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • Breast-feeding

How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a glass of water. It can be swallowed whole or, if preferred, dissolved in a glass of water and stirred before drinking. Take your doses as advised by your doctor, usually five times a day for shingles and chickenpox. Do not take your medicine more often or for a longer time than directed. Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Drink plenty of water while on treatment with this medicine, as it helps to prevent dehydration and kidney damage.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once. Aciclovir 800mg Tablets are not usually harmful unless you take too much over several days.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

What may interact with this medicine?

Give your health care provider a list of all the medicines, herbs, non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements you use. Also, tell them if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs. Some items may interact with your medicine. Specific interactions for Aciclovir can include:

  • Probenecid (used to treat gout)
  • Cimetidine (used to treat stomach ulcers)
  • Mycophenolate mofetil (an immunosuppressant drug)
  • Other drugs that may cause kidney problems (e.g., certain NSAIDs)
  • Zidovudine (used in HIV treatment)

You may get dizzy or feel sleepy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how this drug affects you. Do not stand or sit up quickly, especially if you are an older patient. This reduces the risk of dizzy or fainting spells.

It is advisable to consult your doctor regarding alcohol consumption while on this medication, as it may increase the risk of side effects like dizziness and drowsiness.

Women should inform their doctor if they wish to become pregnant or think they might be pregnant. There is definite evidence of risk to the developing baby, and the doctor will assess benefits versus risks. Talk to your health care professional or pharmacist for more information.

Check with your doctor or health care professional if you experience severe diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, or excessive sweating, as loss of too much body fluid can be dangerous.

  • Allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the hands, feet, face, lips, throat, or tongue
  • Shortness of breath, wheezing, or trouble breathing
  • Changes in mental state such as confusion, hallucinations, unusual agitation, or seizures (more common in older adults or those with kidney problems)
  • Signs of kidney problems (e.g., significant change in the amount of urine passed, blood in urine, swelling in the legs or ankles)
  • Unusual tiredness or weakness
  • Severe headache
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness, fainting spells
  • Fever
  • Nausea and vomiting (severe or persistent)
  • Abdominal pain (severe)

  • Mild nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
