What is this medicine?

CIP-ZOX is a combination medicine containing Ciprofloxacin (an antibiotic) and Tizanidine (a muscle relaxant). It is used to treat muscle spasms associated with painful musculoskeletal conditions and also for bacterial infections susceptible to ciprofloxacin. This combination may be prescribed for infections accompanied by muscular pain or tension.


What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • liver or kidney disease

  • heart problems, especially arrhythmia or QT prolongation

  • myasthenia gravis

  • seizures or epilepsy

  • history of tendon disorders or tendon rupture

  • diabetes (Ciprofloxacin may affect blood sugar)

  • low blood pressure

  • mental health issues (Ciprofloxacin may cause mood changes)

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to ciprofloxacin, tizanidine, other fluoroquinolones, or muscle relaxants

  • if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a full glass of water. You may take it with or without food, but avoid dairy products or calcium-fortified juices with ciprofloxacin.

Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Do not stop taking it early, even if you feel better.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.


What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.


What may interact with this medicine?

Avoid using the following with Cip-Zox:

  • Fluvoxamine

  • Caffeine or products containing caffeine

  • Theophylline

  • Other muscle relaxants or CNS depressants (alcohol, benzodiazepines)

  • Antacids containing magnesium, aluminum, or calcium (reduce ciprofloxacin absorption)

  • Warfarin

  • Antiarrhythmic medications (like amiodarone)

  • Steroids (increased risk of tendon rupture)

This list may not describe all possible interactions. Give your healthcare provider a list of all the medicines, herbs, non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements you use. Also tell them if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs.


What should I watch for while using this medicine?

  • Inform your doctor immediately if you experience muscle weakness, severe dizziness, vision problems, or mood changes.

  • Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything that requires mental alertness until you know how this medicine affects you.

  • Avoid alcohol while using this medication.

  • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids while taking ciprofloxacin.

  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure. Ciprofloxacin may increase your sensitivity to sunlight. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing.

Stop using the medicine and seek medical help if you experience pain, swelling, or rupture of a tendon.


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • Allergic reactions like skin rash, hives, or swelling of the face/lips/tongue

  • Irregular heartbeat or chest pain

  • Confusion, hallucinations, or suicidal thoughts

  • Seizures

  • Severe dizziness or fainting

  • Muscle weakness or severe drowsiness

  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)

  • Pain or swelling in joints or tendons

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report if they continue or are bothersome):

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Drowsiness or dizziness

  • Headache

  • Dry mouth

  • Diarrhea

  • Muscle fatigue or tremors

Where should I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature between 20 and 25°C (68 and 77°F). Protect from moisture, light, and heat. Do not use after the expiration date. Discard unused medicine properly.
