What is this medicine?

AZITHROMYCIN is a macrolide antibiotic. This medicine is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections, such as respiratory tract infections, ear infections, skin infections, and some sexually transmitted infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

This medicine does not work for viral infections (such as common cold or flu).


What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • Kidney or liver disease

  • History of heart problems or irregular heartbeat (including QT prolongation)

  • Low blood levels of potassium or magnesium

  • Myasthenia gravis (a neuromuscular disorder)

  • Previous liver problems caused by azithromycin or similar antibiotics

  • An unusual or allergic reaction to azithromycin, erythromycin, clarithromycin, other macrolide or ketolide antibiotics, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • Pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • Breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a full glass of water. It can be taken with or without food, but taking it with food may reduce stomach upset.

Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Complete the full course of treatment even if you feel better after a few days. Stopping too early may cause the infection to return.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.


What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose.
Do not take double or extra doses.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • Antacids that contain aluminum or magnesium (take at least 2 hours before or after azithromycin)

  • Digoxin

  • Warfarin and other blood thinners

  • Cyclosporine

  • Nelfinavir

  • Ergot alkaloids (such as ergotamine or dihydroergotamine)

  • Medicines for irregular heartbeats (e.g., amiodarone, sotalol, quinidine)

  • Other antibiotics that affect heart rhythm

Also tell them if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs. Some items may interact with your medicine.


What should I watch for while using this medicine?

  • Keep all appointments for doctor visits and lab tests to monitor your response.

  • Tell your doctor if symptoms worsen or do not improve within a few days.

  • Report severe or prolonged diarrhea. This may be a sign of a serious colon condition (C. difficile infection).

  • You may feel dizzy or lightheaded. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or doing activities that require alertness until you know how the drug affects you.

  • Avoid taking antacids within 2 hours before or after the dose.

  • Women: Inform your doctor if you become pregnant or plan to breastfeed.

  • Tell your doctor if you experience symptoms like yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or severe fatigue—these may be signs of liver issues.


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • Allergic reactions like skin rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face/lips/tongue

  • Irregular or fast heartbeat

  • Severe or bloody diarrhea

  • Yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine (possible liver issues)

  • Hearing changes, ringing in the ears

  • Severe stomach pain or cramping

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea
