What is this medicine?

DULOXETINE (in Dulata 20 mg) is a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI). It is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), diabetic nerve pain, fibromyalgia, and chronic musculoskeletal pain (such as back pain or arthritis-related pain). It works by increasing the levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain to help improve mood and reduce pain.


What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • bipolar disorder or history of manic episodes

  • uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma

  • liver or kidney disease

  • high blood pressure

  • seizures or epilepsy

  • bleeding disorders

  • low sodium levels in the blood

  • history of substance abuse

  • suicidal thoughts or behavior

  • if you are taking other antidepressants, especially MAO inhibitors

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to duloxetine, other SNRIs or SSRIs, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a glass of water. It is usually taken once or twice daily, with or without food. Take your doses at regular intervals.

Do not crush, chew, or open the capsule. Swallow it whole.

Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Do not suddenly stop taking duloxetine unless advised by your doctor, as it may cause withdrawal symptoms.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.


What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)

  • other antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclics)

  • linezolid

  • tramadol

  • St. John’s Wort

  • blood thinners (e.g., warfarin)

  • NSAIDs like ibuprofen or naproxen

  • cimetidine

  • fluvoxamine or ciprofloxacin

  • drugs affecting liver enzymes

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

Visit your doctor or health care professional for regular checks on your progress. It may take 1 to 4 weeks to see the full benefit of duloxetine.

Watch closely for worsening depression, suicidal thoughts, or unusual behavior, especially when starting the medicine or changing the dose.

You may get drowsy or dizzy. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything that requires mental alertness until you know how this medicine affects you.

Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine as it may increase the risk of liver damage and side effects.

Stand up slowly from sitting or lying positions to prevent dizziness or fainting.

Let your doctor know if you develop unusual bruising, bleeding, or dark-colored urine.

Do not suddenly stop taking this medication; your doctor may reduce the dose gradually to avoid withdrawal effects such as dizziness, irritability, anxiety, or sleep disturbances.


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • suicidal thoughts or behavior

  • signs of liver problems (yellowing of skin/eyes, dark urine)

  • severe dizziness or fainting

  • unusual bleeding or bruising
