What is this medicine?

ESOHEAL 40 mg contains Esomeprazole, which is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). This medicine reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is used to treat conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, gastric ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It is also used in combination with antibiotics to treat Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and prevent ulcer recurrence.


What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • liver disease

  • kidney disease

  • lupus (systemic lupus erythematosus)

  • low magnesium levels in the blood

  • osteoporosis or history of fractures

  • difficulty swallowing or blood in stool

  • vitamin B12 deficiency

  • any allergic reaction to esomeprazole, other PPIs, or any ingredients in the formulation

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a glass of water. It is usually taken at least 1 hour before a meal. Swallow the tablet whole—do not crush or chew it. Take your doses at regular intervals.

Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Do not stop taking this medicine without your doctor’s approval, even if your symptoms improve.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.


What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • atazanavir, nelfinavir (used for HIV)

  • clopidogrel

  • warfarin or other blood thinners

  • digoxin

  • diazepam

  • methotrexate

  • tacrolimus

  • rifampin

  • St. John’s Wort

  • antifungal agents like ketoconazole or itraconazole

This list may not describe all possible interactions. Give your health care provider a list of all the medicines, herbs, non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements you use. Also tell them if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs. Some items may interact with your medicine.


What should I watch for while using this medicine?

You should start to feel better within a few days of starting this medicine, but full relief may take longer. Do not take antacids within 30 minutes before or after taking this medicine unless advised by your doctor.

Notify your doctor if your symptoms persist, worsen, or if you experience weight loss, vomiting blood, or black stools.

Long-term use (especially over a year) may lead to low magnesium levels, vitamin B12 deficiency, or increased risk of fractures, especially in older adults. Your doctor may perform regular tests to monitor these conditions.

If you develop diarrhea that is watery or has blood in it, contact your doctor. This could be a sign of a serious intestinal condition.


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • allergic reactions like rash, itching, swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat

  • chest pain or irregular heartbeat

  • muscle cramps or tremors

  • dizziness, confusion, or seizures

  • persistent diarrhea

  • signs of low magnesium (muscle spasms, abnormal heartbeat, fatigue)

  • signs of liver problems (yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine)

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

  • headache

  • nausea or vomiting

  • gas

  • constipation or diarrhea

  • stomach pain

  • dry mouth

  • drowsiness

Where should I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature between 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77 degrees F). Protect from moisture and light. Do not store in a bathroom. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
