What is this medicine?

ESOMI 40 mg contains Esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). This medicine reduces the amount of acid your stomach produces. It is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and stomach ulcers, including those associated with NSAID use or Helicobacter pylori infection. It is also used for the long-term management of acid-related disorders.


What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • liver disease

  • kidney disease

  • lupus or other autoimmune disorders

  • low magnesium or calcium levels

  • osteoporosis or history of fractures

  • vitamin B12 deficiency

  • difficulty swallowing or gastrointestinal bleeding

  • persistent vomiting or black stools

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to esomeprazole, omeprazole, other PPIs, or other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a glass of water. It is usually taken at least 1 hour before a meal, typically once a day, or as directed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole—do not crush, split, or chew it.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.


What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • atazanavir, nelfinavir (for HIV)

  • ketoconazole, itraconazole (antifungals)

  • diazepam

  • digoxin

  • methotrexate

  • clopidogrel

  • tacrolimus

  • cilostazol

  • rifampin

  • warfarin or other blood thinners

  • iron supplements

Let your doctor know if you experience persistent diarrhea, muscle spasms, confusion, or irregular heartbeat—these could be signs of electrolyte imbalances.

Inform your doctor if your symptoms do not improve within a few weeks or if they worsen.

Avoid alcohol and tobacco, which can irritate your stomach lining and reduce the effectiveness of the medicine.

Do not self-treat with other acid reducers or antacids without consulting your healthcare provider.


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, swelling of the face/lips/tongue/throat)

  • severe dizziness or fainting

  • seizures

  • irregular heartbeat

  • persistent or severe diarrhea
