What is this medicine?

IVERHEAL (IVERMECTIN 12 mg) is an antiparasitic medicine. It is used to treat certain parasitic infections including intestinal strongyloidiasis, onchocerciasis (river blindness), scabies, and other helminthic (worm) infections. It works by paralyzing and killing parasites, which helps eliminate them from the body.


What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • liver disease or hepatitis

  • asthma or other respiratory conditions

  • immune system disorders

  • seizure disorders or epilepsy

  • Loa loa (African eye worm) infection

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to ivermectin, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a full glass of water. Take it on an empty stomach, preferably 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal, or as directed by your doctor. It is usually given as a single dose or a course based on the type of infection.

Take your dose exactly as prescribed. Do not take more often than directed. Do not stop taking this medicine without your doctor’s advice.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.


What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • warfarin or other blood thinners

  • anti-seizure medicines

  • barbiturates

  • benzodiazepines

  • other antiparasitic medicines

  • alcohol (may increase side effects like dizziness)

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

Follow your doctor’s instructions for follow-up tests, such as stool or blood tests, to confirm the parasite has been cleared.

If you are being treated for onchocerciasis, you may experience a reaction (called the Mazzotti reaction) due to the dying parasites, including fever, skin rash, muscle/joint pain, swollen lymph nodes, or eye problems. Seek medical attention if symptoms are severe.

Avoid alcohol while using this medicine as it can worsen dizziness or drowsiness.

This medicine can cause dizziness or drowsiness. Avoid driving or using machinery until you know how it affects you.

Women should inform their doctor if they are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. The safety of ivermectin in pregnancy is not well established.


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling of the face/lips/tongue/throat)

  • difficulty breathing or swallowing

  • chest pain or rapid heartbeat

  • vision changes

  • confusion or seizures

  • severe dizziness or fainting

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report if persistent or bothersome):

  • headache

  • nausea or vomiting

  • diarrhea

  • muscle or joint pain

  • mild rash or itching
