What is this medicine?

IVERJOHN 12 mg (IVERMECTIN) is an antiparasitic agent. It is used to treat a variety of parasitic infections such as intestinal strongyloidiasis, onchocerciasis (river blindness), scabies, head lice, and other worm infections. It works by paralyzing and killing parasites, helping the body eliminate them.


What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • liver disease or hepatitis

  • immune system problems

  • asthma or other respiratory conditions

  • seizure disorders

  • Loa loa (eye worm) infection

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to ivermectin, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a full glass of water. It is best taken on an empty stomach, usually 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. Follow the dosage instructions provided by your doctor carefully.

Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take more than directed. Do not stop using this medicine without consulting your doctor.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately.


What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • warfarin or other blood thinners

  • barbiturates

  • benzodiazepines

  • valproic acid or other seizure medications

  • other antiparasitic or anthelmintic medicines

  • alcohol (may worsen side effects)

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

Visit your doctor for regular follow-ups. You may need stool or blood tests to confirm that the parasite has been fully cleared.

In some patients, especially those being treated for onchocerciasis, symptoms may worsen temporarily due to dying parasites. These include fever, skin rash, muscle/joint pain, swollen lymph nodes, or vision problems. Seek medical attention if severe.

Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can increase the risk of side effects like dizziness and drowsiness.

This medicine may cause dizziness. Avoid driving, using machinery, or performing tasks that require alertness until you know how it affects you.

Women should tell their doctor if they are or plan to become pregnant. The safety of ivermectin during pregnancy is not fully established.


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling of the face/lips/tongue/throat)

  • difficulty breathing or swallowing

  • chest pain or fast heartbeat

  • vision changes

  • seizures

  • severe dizziness or confusion

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report if persistent or bothersome):

  • nausea or vomiting

  • diarrhea

  • dizziness

  • tiredness or weakness

  • mild rash or itching

  • headache

  • muscle or joint pain
