What is this medicine?

IVERJOHN 6 mg (IVERMECTIN) is an antiparasitic agent. It is used to treat infections caused by certain parasites such as intestinal strongyloidiasis (a roundworm infection) and onchocerciasis (river blindness). It is also used off-label to treat scabies and lice. Ivermectin works by paralyzing and killing the parasites.


What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • liver disease or hepatitis

  • asthma or breathing problems

  • seizures or history of seizure disorders

  • Loa loa (eye worm) infection

  • immune system problems (e.g., HIV/AIDS)

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to ivermectin, other medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a full glass of water. It is usually taken on an empty stomach (at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal). Follow the instructions given by your doctor exactly.

Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Do not stop taking it unless advised by your doctor.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.


What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • warfarin or other blood thinners

  • barbiturates (e.g., phenobarbital)

  • benzodiazepines (e.g., diazepam, lorazepam)

  • valproic acid

  • other antiparasitic medications

  • alcohol

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

Visit your doctor or health care professional for regular progress checkups.

If you’re being treated for onchocerciasis, symptoms such as itching, rash, fever, or joint pain may temporarily worsen due to the death of parasites. This is called the Mazzotti reaction. Report any severe reactions to your doctor.

Avoid alcohol while taking this medication, as it may increase side effects like dizziness or drowsiness.

You may feel dizzy or lightheaded. Do not drive, operate machinery, or perform activities that require mental alertness until you know how this drug affects you.

Women should inform their doctor if they are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Use during pregnancy is not recommended unless clearly needed.


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • allergic reactions like rash, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat

  • difficulty breathing or swallowing

  • chest pain

  • seizures

  • confusion or trouble walking

  • vision changes

  • severe dizziness or fainting

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report if they persist or are bothersome):

  • headache

  • nausea or vomiting

  • diarrhea

  • muscle or joint pain

  • dizziness

  • skin rash or itching

  • tiredness or weakness

Where should I keep my medicine?
