What is this medicine?

IVERLAST (ivermectin) is an antiparasitic agent. This medicine is used to treat parasitic infections such as strongyloidiasis (threadworm of the intestines) and onchocerciasis (river blindness). It is also used off-label for other parasitic conditions including scabies and lice. Ivermectin works by paralyzing and killing parasites.


What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • asthma or other breathing problems

  • HIV/AIDS or a weakened immune system

  • liver disease

  • seizure disorders

  • Loa loa infection (African eye worm)

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to ivermectin, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a full glass of water on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. Follow the directions on your prescription label.

Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Do not stop taking this medicine except on the advice of your doctor or health care professional.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.


What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take double or extra doses.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • barbiturates (such as phenobarbital)

  • benzodiazepines (such as diazepam or lorazepam)

  • valproic acid

  • other medicines that may make you drowsy

  • warfarin or other blood thinners

  • certain herbal products like St. John’s Wort

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

  • You may need repeat stool tests or eye exams depending on the condition being treated.

  • Inform your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or get worse.

  • Dizziness or drowsiness may occur. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how this medicine affects you.

  • Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration, especially if you are being treated for diarrhea caused by parasites.


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue

  • chest pain

  • difficulty breathing

  • confusion or hallucinations

  • seizures

  • fever or chills

  • rapid heartbeat

  • loss of coordination

  • vision changes

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

  • dizziness

  • nausea

  • diarrhea

  • fatigue

  • headache

  • mild skin rash

  • muscle or joint pain

Where should I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature between 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77 degrees F). Protect from moisture and light.
