What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • History of heart problems (such as irregular heartbeat, chest pain, high blood pressure)

  • Liver or kidney disease

  • Mental health conditions (depression, anxiety, psychosis, mania)

  • Sleep disorders other than the prescribed condition

  • History of drug abuse, including stimulants

  • Unusual or allergic reactions to modafinil or related medications

  • If you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant

  • If you are breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?

Take this tablet by mouth, with or without food, usually once daily:

  • For narcolepsy or sleep apnea: take in the morning.

  • For shift work sleep disorder: take approximately one hour before your shift starts.

Do not chew or crush the tablet; swallow it whole.
Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not increase the dose or take more frequently than prescribed.
Do not stop taking this medicine without your doctor’s advice.

Overdosage: If you think you’ve taken too much, contact a poison control center or emergency services right away.


What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose:

  • For narcolepsy/sleep apnea: Skip the missed morning dose and take the next dose as scheduled.

  • For shift work disorder: Skip if it’s too close to your next shift.
    Do not double up or take extra doses.
