What is this medicine?

It’s used to relieve allergy symptoms (such as runny nose, sneezing, hives), treat nausea and vomiting (including motion sickness), and as a sedative for short-term use—including insomnia or pre-medication—and as a pediatric sedative.


What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • Allergy to promethazine or any inactive ingredients (e.g., lactose)

  • You’re under 2 years old (risk of fatal respiratory depression)

  • Seizures or epilepsy

  • Respiratory issues like asthma, bronchitis, COPD

  • Glaucoma (narrow-angle)

  • Enlarged prostate or urinary retention

  • Heart problems, hypotension

  • Liver or kidney disease

  • Taking MAO inhibitors (or within past 14 days)

  • If pregnant or breastfeeding—risk of neonatal effects

  • Using sedatives, tranquilizers, antidepressants, or alcohol (increased drowsiness)


How should I use this medicine?

  • Dosage (adults and children ≥5 years): Typically 25 mg orally once daily at bedtime. May increase to 25 mg twice daily for insomnia or sedation. For motion sickness: one dose night before travel, repeat after 6–8 hours if needed.

  • Important:

    • Do not use for more than 7 days without medical advice

    • Skip missed dose; do not double dose

    • In overdose, seek immediate medical help—symptoms may include extreme sleepiness, seizures, coma

    • Do not share medication


What if I miss a dose?

Take it as soon as you remember only if you’re using it for allergy or nausea. If it’s nearly time for your next dose (e.g., bedtime dose), skip the missed one and resume normally. Do not take a double dose.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • MAO inhibitors (IF taken within 14 days before starting)

  • Sedatives, hypnotics, tricyclic antidepressants, anticholinergic drugs (increased drowsiness/dry mouth)

  • Alcohol — avoid (can intensify drowsiness)

  • May interfere with urine pregnancy tests; stop at least 3 days before a skin test


What should I watch for while using this medicine?

  • Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how sedated you may become; effects may last up to 12 hours

  • Use caution if you have respiratory conditions (like asthma), glaucoma, epilepsy, or heart/liver/kidney disorders

  • Use brief-term only (under 7 days)—consult your doctor if symptoms persist


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?

Serious — report to your doctor immediately:

  • Allergic reaction: rash, swelling of face/lips/throat, difficulty breathing

  • Irregular heartbeat, palpitations

  • Muscle stiffness or uncontrolled movements (extrapyramidal effects)

  • Signs of liver issues: jaundice

Common mild side effects (not usually dangerous):

  • Drowsiness, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, blurry vision, urinary difficulty, restlessness, confusion (especially in older adults or children)

  • Photosensitivity—avoid strong sunlight


Where should I keep my medicine?

  • Store in its original packaging, away from light and moisture, below 30 °C (86 °F)

  • Keep out of reach of children

  • Dispose of properly after the expiration date
