What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • Kidney disease or decreased kidney function

  • Liver disease

  • Anemia or vitamin B deficiency

  • Diabetes

  • Lung disease or history of pulmonary fibrosis

  • Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency

  • Any neurological or nerve disorders

  • Previous allergic reaction to nitrofurantoin or similar medicines

  • If you are pregnant (especially in late pregnancy) or trying to get pregnant

  • Breast-feeding

  • If you have urine that is dark or yellow-brown (could be a side effect or symptom)


How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with food or milk to enhance absorption and reduce stomach upset. Swallow it with a full glass of water. Follow the instructions on the prescription label. Take it at regular intervals as prescribed.
