What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • dementia (especially in elderly patients)

  • diabetes or a family history of diabetes

  • epilepsy or history of seizures

  • enlarged prostate

  • glaucoma

  • heart disease or stroke

  • high cholesterol or triglycerides

  • liver disease

  • Parkinson’s disease

  • suicidal thoughts or behavior

  • smoking or using tobacco

  • trouble swallowing

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to olanzapine, other antipsychotics, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a glass of water. You may take it with or without food. Take your doses at regular intervals, at the same time each day.

Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Do not suddenly stop taking this medicine unless instructed by your doctor. Stopping abruptly may worsen your condition.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.


What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • other antipsychotics

  • benzodiazepines (e.g., lorazepam, diazepam)

  • carbamazepine

  • ciprofloxacin

  • fluvoxamine

  • alcohol

  • medicines for Parkinson’s disease

  • medications for high blood pressure

  • sleep aids or tranquilizers

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

  • Monitor for signs of worsening mood, unusual thoughts, or suicidal behavior, especially at the start of treatment or after dose changes.

  • Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated. Drink plenty of fluids, especially in hot weather or while exercising.

  • This medicine may increase blood sugar levels. If you are diabetic, monitor your blood glucose closely.

  • Olanzapine may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you.

  • Avoid alcohol as it may increase drowsiness and other side effects.

  • Tell your doctor if you experience unusual movements, especially of the face, mouth, or tongue (possible tardive dyskinesia).

  • signs of an allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling, trouble breathing)

  • uncontrollable movements (tardive dyskinesia)

  • high blood sugar (increased thirst, frequent urination, confusion)

  • signs of liver problems (yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine)

  • chest pain or irregular heartbeat

  • fever, stiff muscles, confusion (possible neuroleptic malignant syndrome)

  • seizures

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report if persistent or bothersome):

  • drowsiness

  • weight gain

  • increased appetite

  • constipation

  • dizziness

  • dry mouth

  • restlessness

  • trouble sleeping
