What is this medicine?
RIVAROX 10mg contains Rivaroxaban, an oral anticoagulant (blood thinner). It belongs to a class of medicines called factor Xa inhibitors. This medicine helps prevent and treat blood clots. It is used to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation, and to treat or prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). It is also used after certain surgeries to prevent clot formation.


What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • bleeding disorders or history of abnormal bleeding

  • active or recent internal bleeding

  • liver disease

  • kidney disease

  • heart valve disease or prosthetic heart valve

  • recent surgery or trauma

  • history of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA)

  • low blood pressure

  • if you are taking any other blood thinners (like warfarin or heparin)

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to rivaroxaban or other blood thinners

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?
Take this medicine by mouth with or without food, as prescribed. For certain conditions (like DVT or PE), it may need to be taken with food for better absorption. Take it at the same time each day. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.

Do not stop taking this medicine without your doctor’s advice, even if you feel well.

Overdosage:
If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.


What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose and are taking the medicine once daily, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Do not take two doses on the same day to make up for a missed dose.

If you are on a twice-daily dosing schedule (in the initial phase of treatment), take the missed dose as soon as possible on the same day, and continue with your regular dosing schedule.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • antifungal medicines like ketoconazole or itraconazole

  • HIV medicines like ritonavir

  • other blood thinners (warfarin, heparin, enoxaparin)

  • NSAIDs like ibuprofen or naproxen

  • anti-seizure medicines like phenytoin, carbamazepine

  • rifampin (used for tuberculosis)

This list may not describe all possible interactions. Give your health care provider a list of all the medicines, herbs, non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements you use. Also tell them if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs.


What should I watch for while using this medicine?

  • Attend all regular check-ups to monitor your blood condition and bleeding risk.

  • Inform your dentist or surgeon that you are taking this medicine before any dental or surgical procedure.

  • Watch for signs of bleeding such as easy bruising, unusual nosebleeds, blood in urine or stool, or coughing up blood.

  • Do not engage in activities that increase your risk of injury or bleeding.

  • Avoid alcohol, as it can increase the risk of stomach bleeding.

  • Women should inform their doctor if they are or plan to become pregnant. This medicine may harm the fetus and is usually not recommended during pregnancy.


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?
Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • unusual or heavy bleeding

  • black or tarry stools

  • pink or brown urine

  • coughing up or vomiting blood

  • severe headache, dizziness, or fainting

  • vision changes

  • joint pain with swelling

  • allergic reactions like rash, itching, swelling of face/lips/tongue/throat

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report if persistent or bothersome):

  • mild bleeding from gums or nose

  • easy bruising

  • fatigue or weakness

  • nausea

  • stomach upset
