What is this medicine?

SPYRRO (Spironolactone) is a potassium-sparing diuretic (water pill) and an aldosterone antagonist. It is used to treat conditions such as high blood pressure, heart failure, edema (fluid retention), and certain cases of hyperaldosteronism. It may also be prescribed for patients with low potassium levels or for managing hormonal acne or hirsutism (excess hair growth) in women.


What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • Addison’s disease or other adrenal gland problems

  • High levels of potassium in the blood (hyperkalemia)

  • Kidney disease or failure

  • Liver disease or cirrhosis

  • Heart disease

  • Diabetes

  • If you are on a salt-restricted or potassium-rich diet

  • An unusual or allergic reaction to spironolactone, sulfa drugs, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • Pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • Breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with food to reduce stomach upset. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take more medicine than directed. Do not stop taking this medicine except on the advice of your doctor or health care professional.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • ACE inhibitors like lisinopril or enalapril

  • Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) like losartan or valsartan

  • Potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium

  • NSAIDs like ibuprofen or naproxen

  • Digoxin

  • Lithium

  • Other diuretics or blood pressure medicines

  • Heparin

  • Trimethoprim
