What is this medicine?

SUMITOP 100 mg Tablet contains Sumatriptan, which belongs to a class of medications called triptans (serotonin 5-HT1 receptor agonists). This medicine is used to treat migraine attacks with or without aura. It works by narrowing blood vessels in the brain and blocking the release of certain natural substances that cause migraine symptoms such as pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound.


What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • Heart disease or previous heart attack

  • History of stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA), or hemiplegic/basilar migraine

  • High blood pressure (especially uncontrolled)

  • Liver disease

  • Peripheral vascular disease

  • Epilepsy or seizures

  • If you smoke or have risk factors for heart disease (e.g., diabetes, high cholesterol)

  • An unusual or allergic reaction to sumatriptan, other triptans, or any other ingredients

  • Pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • Breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a full glass of water as soon as you notice migraine symptoms. It can be taken with or without food.

  • Do not take more than 200 mg in 24 hours. If your migraine comes back after the first dose, you may take a second dose at least 2 hours after the first.

  • Do not take more than two 100 mg tablets in one day.

  • Use only as directed for migraine attacks. Do not take for other types of headaches.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.


What if I miss a dose?

This medicine is not for scheduled use. It should be taken only when migraine symptoms occur. Do not take it as a preventive or maintenance dose.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • Ergotamine or ergot-type medicines (e.g., dihydroergotamine, methysergide) — do not use within 24 hours of sumatriptan

  • Other triptans (e.g., rizatriptan, zolmitriptan) — avoid within 24 hours

  • MAO inhibitors (e.g., isocarboxazid, phenelzine, selegiline)

  • SSRIs or SNRIs (e.g., fluoxetine, sertraline, venlafaxine) — risk of serotonin syndrome

  • Lithium

  • Herbal products like St. John’s Wort

This list may not describe all possible interactions. Give your health care provider a list of all the medicines, herbs, non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements you use. Also tell them if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs.


What should I watch for while using this medicine?

  • Use only for migraine that has been diagnosed by your healthcare provider.

  • Do not use to treat other types of headaches.

  • Tell your doctor if your migraine symptoms do not improve or get worse after taking this medicine.

  • Report any symptoms of chest pain, pressure, or tightness right away.

  • Avoid driving or operating machinery if you feel dizzy, drowsy, or weak.

  • Stop using and seek medical attention if you experience numbness, weakness, speech problems, or vision changes.

  • Women who are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or breastfeeding should consult their doctor.


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • Chest pain or tightness

  • Fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat

  • Severe dizziness or fainting

  • Shortness of breath

  • Vision changes

  • Seizures

  • Numbness or tingling in arms/legs

  • Severe stomach pain or bloody diarrhea

  • Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling of the face/lips/throat, trouble breathing)

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report if they continue or are bothersome):

  • Drowsiness or tiredness

  • Nausea

  • Dizziness

  • Flushing or warm feeling

  • Tingling or numbness (mild and temporary)

  • Muscle aches

Where should I keep my medicine?

  • Keep out of the reach of children.

  • Store at room temperature between 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77 degrees F).
