What is this medicine?

TAMSULOSIN is an alpha-1 adrenergic blocker. This medicine is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men, a condition also known as an enlarged prostate. It helps relax the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, making it easier to urinate and reducing symptoms such as weak urine stream, difficulty starting urination, and frequent or urgent need to urinate.


What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • Liver disease

  • Kidney disease

  • Low blood pressure

  • History of fainting or dizziness

  • Eye surgery planned (especially cataract or glaucoma—Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome risk)

  • Allergy to tamsulosin or other medications

  • Taking medications for erectile dysfunction

  • Using herbal supplements (e.g., saw palmetto)

  • Pregnant or breast-feeding (Note: Not intended for use in women)


How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth, typically once daily, about 30 minutes after the same meal each day.
Swallow the capsule whole with water. Do not crush, chew, or open the capsule.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.

NOTE: This medicine is only for you. Do not share this medicine with others.


What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can.
If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
If you miss doses for several days, consult your doctor before restarting.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • Other alpha blockers (e.g., doxazosin, prazosin)

  • Erectile dysfunction medications (e.g., sildenafil, tadalafil)

  • Blood pressure-lowering medicines

  • Ketoconazole, itraconazole (antifungals)

  • Clarithromycin (antibiotic)

  • Ritonavir (HIV medication)

Report these side effects to your doctor immediately:

  • Allergic reactions like rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat

  • Chest pain

  • Severe dizziness or fainting

  • Painful, prolonged erection (priapism)

  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report if persistent):

  • Runny or stuffy nose

  • Dizziness
