What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • Heart conditions (angina, irregular heartbeat, recent heart attack, heart failure)

  • History of stroke

  • Very low or high blood pressure

  • Liver or kidney disease

  • Bleeding disorders

  • Blood cell disorders (e.g., sickle cell anemia, leukemia, multiple myeloma)

  • Eye problems such as retinitis pigmentosa or sudden vision loss

  • Physical deformation of the penis (e.g., Peyronie’s disease)

  • History of prolonged or painful erections (priapism)

  • Allergies to sildenafil or any components of the tablet

  • If you are taking nitrate medications or nitric oxide donors

  • If you use alcohol, tobacco, or recreational drugs


How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a glass of water, 30–60 minutes before planned sexual activity. It usually starts working within that time frame and may last for up to 4 hours. Do not take more than one dose in 24 hours.

Avoid taking it with a high-fat meal, as this may delay its onset.

Overdosage: If an overdose is suspected, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately.

What if I miss a dose?

This medicine is taken as needed. A missed dose is not typically applicable. Do not take multiple doses to make up for one.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • Nitrates (used for chest pain)

  • Alpha-blockers (used for prostate problems or high blood pressure)

  • Other ED drugs (e.g., tadalafil, vardenafil)

  • HIV medications (e.g., ritonavir)

  • Antifungals (e.g., ketoconazole, itraconazole)

  • Antibiotics (e.g., erythromycin, clarithromycin)

  • Grapefruit juice

  • Recreational drugs, especially those called “poppers” that contain nitrates

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

  • Do not take this medicine if you are also using nitrate drugs.

  • Limit or avoid alcohol; it can increase the risk of side effects.

  • Avoid operating machinery or driving until you know how this medicine affects you.

  • Report any sudden vision or hearing loss immediately.

  • Do not combine with other ED medicines unless instructed by your doctor.


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?

Serious side effects – seek medical attention:

  • Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling of face/lips/tongue)

  • Chest pain or irregular heartbeat
