What is this medicine?

VENLAFAXINE is a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI). This medicine is used to treat depression, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and panic disorder. It works by restoring the balance of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain, which helps improve mood and reduce anxiety.


What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • bipolar disorder or mania

  • glaucoma

  • high blood pressure or heart problems

  • history of seizures

  • kidney or liver disease

  • low sodium levels in the blood

  • suicidal thoughts or previous suicide attempt

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to venlafaxine, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • if you are taking other medicines for depression or anxiety

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a glass of water. Swallow the extended-release tablet whole — do not cut, crush, chew, or divide the tablet. Take it at the same time each day, with food to reduce stomach upset.

Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Do not suddenly stop taking this medicine without the advice of your doctor as it may cause withdrawal symptoms.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.


What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take double or extra doses.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • other antidepressants (especially MAO inhibitors like isocarboxazid, phenelzine, tranylcypromine)

  • linezolid

  • lithium

  • tramadol

  • tryptophan or 5-HTP supplements

  • NSAIDs like ibuprofen or naproxen

  • warfarin or other blood thinners

  • antifungals (ketoconazole)

  • medicines for migraine headaches (triptans)

  • St. John’s Wort

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

Visit your doctor or health care professional regularly to check your progress. It may take a few weeks before you feel the full effect.

Inform your doctor if your depression or anxiety worsens or if you have thoughts of self-harm.

You may get drowsy, dizzy, or have blurred vision. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how this medicine affects you.

Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine as it may increase drowsiness or risk of side effects.

This medicine can increase blood pressure, so monitor your blood pressure as directed.

Do not stop taking venlafaxine suddenly. Doing so may cause withdrawal symptoms such as agitation, nausea, sweating, headache, and confusion. Your doctor will tell you how to taper the dose safely.


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • suicidal thoughts or behavior

  • unusual changes in mood or behavior

  • chest pain, fast or irregular heartbeat

  • severe headache, blurred vision

  • seizures

  • difficulty breathing or swallowing

  • allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue

  • unusual bleeding or bruising

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

  • nausea

  • dry mouth

  • dizziness

  • insomnia or drowsiness

  • constipation

  • sweating

  • loss of appetite

  • sexual side effects (such as decreased desire or difficulty achieving orgasm)

Where should I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature between 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77 degrees F). Protect from moisture and light. Keep the bottle tightly closed.
