VILDALIP-MET 50/1000 mg is a combination medicine that contains Vildagliptin (50 mg) and Metformin (1000 mg).

  • Vildagliptin is a DPP-4 inhibitor that increases the release of insulin and decreases the production of glucagon.

  • Metformin is a biguanide that reduces glucose production in the liver and improves insulin sensitivity.

This medicine is used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults, especially when diet, exercise, and single-agent therapy do not result in adequate glycemic control.


What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • kidney or liver disease

  • heart failure or recent heart attack

  • history of pancreatitis

  • severe infection or dehydration

  • a history of lactic acidosis

  • if you are planning surgery or radiologic procedures involving contrast dye

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to vildagliptin, metformin, or other medications

  • breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a meal to reduce stomach upset. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew.

Take your doses at regular intervals as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take more than directed.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.


What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • alcohol

  • other antidiabetic medicines (insulin, sulfonylureas)

  • corticosteroids

  • diuretics (water pills)

  • blood pressure medicines (especially beta-blockers)

  • iodine-containing contrast used in imaging

  • thyroid medications

  • some antibiotics (e.g., rifampicin)

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

Be alert for signs of lactic acidosis (a rare but serious side effect): rapid breathing, unusual drowsiness, muscle pain, abdominal pain, or cold feeling in the limbs.

Watch for symptoms of pancreatitis (severe upper abdominal pain radiating to the back, nausea, or vomiting).

Limit or avoid alcohol as it increases the risk of lactic acidosis.

Monitor your blood sugar levels closely, especially when starting treatment or changing the dose.

Inform your doctor if you become pregnant or plan to breastfeed.


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • symptoms of lactic acidosis (muscle pain, fatigue, stomach pain, trouble breathing)

  • signs of pancreatitis (severe stomach pain, nausea, vomiting)

  • signs of liver problems (yellowing of skin/eyes, dark urine)

  • allergic reactions (rash, swelling, itching, difficulty breathing)

  • low blood sugar (shakiness, dizziness, hunger, confusion — especially when used with other diabetic meds)

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report if persistent or bothersome):

  • headache

  • metallic taste in mouth

  • nausea or vomiting

  • diarrhea

  • stomach discomfort

  • weight loss
