What is this medicine?

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • kidney disease or kidney function problems

  • immune system issues (such as HIV/AIDS or post-transplant therapy)

  • galactose intolerance or Lapp lactase deficiency (due to lactose content in some tablets)

  • history of allergic reaction to famciclovir or penciclovir

  • pregnant or planning to become pregnant

  • breast-feeding


How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth, with or without food, as directed by your doctor. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Continue the full course of treatment even if you feel better before it’s completed.

Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication to help prevent kidney problems.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room right away.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.


What may interact with this medicine?

  • probenecid

  • other antiviral medicines (e.g., acyclovir, valacyclovir)

  • medicines that affect kidney function (e.g., NSAIDs like ibuprofen, some antibiotics)

  • allopurinol

  • immunosuppressant drugs (e.g., cyclosporine, tacrolimus)

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

  • Start the medication at the first sign of symptoms (tingling, itching, or burning) for best results.

  • While famciclovir helps manage outbreaks, it does not prevent transmission of herpes to others. Avoid intimate contact during outbreaks and use barrier protection even when no symptoms are present.

  • If you are taking this medicine for a long time or repeatedly, your doctor will monitor your kidney function.

  • Keep hydrated to reduce the risk of kidney-related side effects.

  • If your condition does not improve or worsens, contact your healthcare provider.


What side effects may I notice from this medicine?

  • allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling of face/lips/tongue, difficulty breathing)

  • confusion or hallucinations (rare, more likely in older adults or those with kidney issues)

  • persistent fatigue or weakness

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report if they continue or are bothersome):

  • headache
