What is this medicine?

ZHEVAVIR (Entecavir) 0.5 mg Tablet is an antiviral medicine. It is used to treat chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in adults and children over 2 years old with active viral replication and liver inflammation. Entecavir works by reducing the amount of hepatitis B virus in the body and helping the liver recover.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • HIV or AIDS

  • Kidney disease

  • Liver problems other than hepatitis B

  • Organ transplant history

  • Previous antiviral treatment for hepatitis B

  • If you are lactose intolerant (the tablet may contain lactose)

  • An unusual or allergic reaction to Entecavir or any other medications

  • Pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • Breast-feeding

How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth on an empty stomach (at least 2 hours before or after food) with a glass of water. Take your doses at regular intervals, preferably at the same time each day.

Do not take more than prescribed. Do not stop taking this medicine unless advised by your doctor. Stopping suddenly may worsen your condition.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take double or extra doses.

What may interact with this medicine?

  • Other antiviral medications, especially for HIV (e.g., tenofovir, lamivudine, zidovudine)

  • Medicines that affect kidney function

  • Immunosuppressants

  • Antibiotics such as aminoglycosides

This list may not describe all possible interactions. Provide your healthcare provider a complete list of all medications, supplements, or herbal products you take. Also mention if you consume alcohol or use recreational drugs.

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

  • Regular blood tests will be needed to monitor liver function and virus levels.

  • Your doctor may test you for HIV before starting treatment; taking Entecavir alone in patients with HIV may lead to resistance.

  • Inform your doctor immediately if you develop symptoms such as persistent tiredness, muscle weakness, breathing difficulty, or unusual stomach discomfort, which may indicate lactic acidosis (a rare but serious side effect).

  • Continue treatment even if you feel better. The virus may continue to replicate if treatment is stopped early.

  • Your doctor may monitor you for several months after stopping the medicine to watch for hepatitis flares.

  • Avoid alcohol as it may increase liver strain.

Pregnant women should use this medicine only if clearly needed. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment.

  • Signs of lactic acidosis: deep or rapid breathing, unusual tiredness, muscle pain, or dizziness
